Del Negro’s future up in the air

While everyone agrees Chicago Bulls head coach Vinny Del Negro will be fired, reports as to when it will happen remain varied.

ESPN’s Chris Broussard reported Monday that Del Negro’s firing would be announced as soon the team decided who his replacement would be.

However, on Dec. 29 John Jackson, of the Chicago-Sun Times, wrote, “Before anyone gets too excited — or upset, depending on your point of view — let me begin by saying there’s not much validity to the ESPN.com report that circulated Monday about the future (or lack thereof) of Vinny Del Negro as Bulls coach.”

Jackson thinks the Bulls will let Del Negro finish out the season as head coach before firing him because it would be difficult to find a long-term replacement to take over at this point in the season.

Broussard wrote that his sources for the report said the Bulls do not want to promote one of its assistant coaches, TNT analyst Doug Collins has declined consideration for the job and John Paxson, Bulls general manager, has also been ruled out.

Last week, Ken Berger of CBSsports.com reported that Del Negro had until mid-Jan. before a final decision would be made.

“Rather than push the panic button too early and send the surrender message to the players, GM Gar Forman and advisor John Paxson were telling confidants that they preferred to give Del Negro until mid-January to prove this season was going somewhere,” Berger wrote.
